The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) favours habitats close to coasts, rivers and large lakes, where tall trees or rocky ledges serve as perches and nest sites. Its nest ranks among the largest built by any bird in the world. A pair often reuses the same nest for decades, adding to it each year until it can weigh several tonnes. The bird only develops its trademark white head and tail as an adult; young eagles remain mostly dark brown until they are four or five years old. Breeding itself only begins once this maturity is reached.
