The leopard (Panthera pardus) is the most adaptable of all the big cats. It is at home in the rainforests of central Africa, the semi-deserts of Arabia and the snowy forests of the Russian Far East. It hunts alone and mostly after dark, taking antelope, monkeys and rodents. Its rosettes dissolve the outline in dappled shade, letting it close to within a few metres of its prey. Leopards climb superbly and haul their kills into the fork of a tree, out of reach of hyenas and lions. A cub stays with its mother for eighteen months to two years before seeking a territory of its own.
Did you know that the black panther is not a species in its own right? The name covers leopards and jaguars whose coats produce an unusual amount of dark pigment. Catch one in sidelight and the rosettes are still plainly visible beneath the black.
