The Folkmanis little mole hand puppet is a welcome friend in any garden play scene. This cute critter is unmistakable with a large snout, movable mouth and claws for digging. Built as a small stage puppet, it sits firmly in a child's hand right from that first performance.
Moles (Talpidae) spend their lives in tunnels they dig themselves beneath meadows, fields and gardens. Their forelegs are set well forward on the body and end in broad spades that push the soil aside. Earthworms are the staple food, along with grubs and insect larvae that tumble into the runs. The eyes are tiny, yet whiskers on snout and tail report every tremor in the ground. The fur has no lie and can be brushed either way, so the animal moves forwards and backwards through narrow tubes.
Did you know that moles keep a larder? They bite captured earthworms at the front end, which leaves them unable to move yet still alive. Researchers have found over a thousand worms stored in a single chamber.
