Folkmanis Sphinx Cat Hand Puppet

Selectively bred from the 1960s onwards, the hairless cat has become popular in recent years. The Folkmanis sphynx cat hand puppet is true to breed with peach fuzz skin in super soft velboa, extra-large ears, long limbs and big blue eyes. Smart and affectionate in temperament, almost like a dog, this extraordinary puppet with a movable mouth seeks out the warmth of your companionship.

The breed began with a handful of chance finds. A hairless kitten called Prune was born in Toronto in 1966, but that line later died out. The sphynx of today descends from hairless strays found in Minnesota and from a second Toronto litter, both crossed with Devon Rex cats in the 1970s. The cause is a change in the KRT71 gene, which governs how the hair shaft is built. A sphynx is therefore not truly hairless: a fine down covers the skin, and the folds across head and shoulders belong to the breed standard.

Did you know that a sphynx feels warmer to the touch than other cats? Its body temperature is no higher than any other domestic cat's; there is simply no fur between skin and hand. Lacking that insulating layer, it burns more energy, eats more than cats of similar size and seeks out warm spots noticeably often.
