With amazing lifelike details and an easy to use movable mouth, this toothy donkey stage puppet is ready to bray and play with you!
The domestic donkey (Equus asinus) descends from the African wild ass and was tamed in north-east Africa some 6,000 years ago, earlier than the horse. Its build suits dry country: the outsized ears shed heat, and its water balance copes with losses that would put a horse in danger. Coarse grasses, thistles and twigs that other grazers leave untouched are food enough. Donkeys form close bonds with one particular companion and grow restless as soon as that companion is missing. For thousands of years they carried trade goods over mountain passes and across deserts, which made them the pack animal of the ancient world.
Did you know that a donkey's call carries as far as three kilometres? The bray comes in two parts, one drawn in and one pushed out, which is what gives it that rasping double note. Across the open country the donkey comes from, that call keeps it in touch with companions it can no longer see.
