The northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) lives from the eastern United States down into Mexico, in thickets, along woodland edges and in gardens, and stays put all winter. Only the male wears that blazing red; the female is olive-brown with red touches on crest, wings and tail. A heavy conical beak cracks tough seeds, and the diet fills out with berries and, in summer, insects for the nestlings. Both sexes carry a crest that rises steeply when the bird is roused and lies flat when it is calm. Territories are defended year-round with clear, whistled phrases delivered from a high perch.
Did you know that the female northern cardinal sings as well? Among North American songbirds that is unusual, as most species leave the singing to the males. She sings even from the nest, and the phrases appear to tell her mate when to bring food.
