Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals that will roll up into a ball for protection. This little ball of fun has soft plush spines, so it is fine to cuddle.
Hedgehogs (Erinaceinae) are insectivores that work their way through hedgerows, gardens and woodland edges after dark. Several thousand spines cover the back, while the belly stays soft and furred. Beetles, earwigs, caterpillars, earthworms and slugs make up most of the diet. Eyesight counts for little, so the nose and ears take the lead, the snout held low along a scent trail. A powerful ring of muscle around the back draws the spiny skin together like a drawstring bag.
Did you know that a hedgehog will perfume itself with its own saliva? On meeting a strong, unfamiliar smell it chews at the source until the saliva froths, then spreads the foam across its spines with its long tongue. Nobody has settled the reason yet: camouflage, cleaning and courtship are all still argued over.
