The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is by far the most widely distributed carnivore on the planet. It is found across nearly all of Europe, Asia and North America, in parts of North Africa, and, since the nineteenth century, in Australia too. As an omnivore it eats whatever the season provides – mice, insects, berries, windfall fruit, carrion – drawing on more than 300 recorded food sources. Head and body measure 46 to 90 centimetres, with a bushy tail adding a further 30 to 55 centimetres, and weight usually falls between three and eleven kilograms. A breeding pair stays together for one season to raise their young, producing on average four to six cubs a year. Over short distances a red fox can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometres an hour.
