The common raven (Corvus corax) is the largest songbird on earth, with a wingspan of a good 1.2 metres. Its range circles the northern hemisphere from desert country to well beyond the Arctic Circle, and it does equally well on sea cliffs, mountains and the edges of towns. Almost anything will serve as food: carrion, mice, eggs, insects, berries, nuts and whatever people leave behind. Adult ravens live in pairs that stay together for years and defend a territory against anything with feathers. In flight they are known by the wedge-shaped tail, the deep croaking call and by rolls and tumbles no other crow performs.
Did you know that ravens and wolves work together? Ravens follow packs across long distances and call loudly on finding a dead animal, drawing the wolves in, because wolf teeth open a carcass that no beak could breach. In Yellowstone, ravens attend almost every wolf kill.
