Squirrels belong to a large family of small or medium-sized rodents called the Sciuridae. The family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including woodchucks), flying squirrels, and prairie dogs. Squirrels are indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and have been introduced to Australia.
Squirrels are largely solitary animals, each defending a territory that overlaps only slightly with its neighbours. Females usually raise two litters a year, each with three or four naked, blind young that stay in the nest for around seven weeks. Alongside nuts and seeds, the diet includes buds, fungi, bark and, now and then, birds' eggs. When danger threatens, a squirrel warns others nearby with a sharp, repeated scolding call from up in a tree. Activity peaks in the early morning and late afternoon, with the midday hours often reserved for resting in the nest.
Did you know that red squirrels are excellent climbers and spend most of their life in trees? These agile animals have a bushy tail that helps them balance as they jump from branch to branch. Their bright red fur provides good camouflage in the coniferous forests where they are often found.
