Those oversized ears of the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) do far more than listen. They are laced with fine blood vessels that release heat into the air, which matters a great deal on the open prairie in high summer. The eyes sit well back on the sides of the head and give an almost complete field of view without the animal turning at all. The jack rabbit is busiest at dusk and after dark, when the air cools and hunting birds see less.
Did you know that the name jackrabbit began as jackass rabbit? Settlers in the American West thought the long ears looked like a donkey’s, and the shorter version stuck. Despite the name, the animal is a true hare rather than a rabbit.
