Emperor penguins live exclusively in Antarctica, forming the southernmost breeding colonies of any penguin species, often hundreds of kilometres from open water. Adults dive as deep as 500 metres to hunt and can stay submerged for over 20 minutes at a time. Fish, squid and krill make up most of their diet, snapped up with a narrow, precise beak. Standing up to 1.2 metres tall and weighing between 20 and 40 kilograms, the emperor penguin is the largest of all penguin species. Between colony and open sea, the birds cover long distances across the ice, either waddling or tobogganing on their bellies.
