The spotted owl (Strix occidentalis) belongs to the old conifer and oak forests of western North America, from British Columbia down to the mountain woods of Mexico. Its dark brown plumage is scattered all over with white spots, there are no ear tufts, and the eyes are deep black. It hunts by waiting quietly on a low branch, then dropping in silence onto woodrats, flying squirrels and mice. Nests are made in tree cavities, broken tree tops or the abandoned nests of hawks, usually holding two eggs. A single pair claims several hundred hectares of mature forest, which makes young plantations useless to it.
Did you know that this owl once put a whole region in uproar? When it was listed as threatened in 1990, the last old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest went on the list with it. The argument between timber and conservation then ran through the papers for years. Few owls have been pictured so often.
