Folkmanis Goat Hand Puppet

A perennial petting zoo and farm favourite, the good-natured Folkmanis Goat is charming and sweet. This salt-and-pepper rendition has a sweet face, floppy ears and soft, safe, stuffed horns. Weighted vinyl hooves make playtime jumping and climbing, two of a goat's favourite activities, realistic and fun.

The domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) was tamed from the wild bezoar goat in the Fertile Crescent some ten thousand years ago, which puts it among the very first farm animals. As a ruminant it has a stomach of four chambers and brings food back up from the rumen to chew a second time. Unlike cattle it does not simply crop grass but browses through herbs, twigs, foliage and bark, picking out the most nourishing mouthfuls as it goes. Its climbing owes everything to cloven hooves that spread apart and to soft pads between them that grip bare rock. A herd keeps a settled hierarchy, and it mostly decides who gets to the feed first.

Did you know that a goat's pupil lies horizontally? The wide slit delivers a panorama of almost three hundred and twenty degrees, in which a stalking predator has very little cover. When the goat lowers its head to graze, the eyeballs rotate so that the pupil stays level with the ground.
