The extraordinary Folkmanis mini snake finger puppet is coiled and ready for nature exploration.
Snakes (Serpentes) live on every continent apart from Antarctica, in deserts as readily as in rainforests and rivers. Depending on the species their backbone holds two hundred to over four hundred vertebrae, most of them carrying ribs. The forked tongue gathers scent particles from the air and delivers them to a sense organ in the roof of the mouth, which works out the direction a trail runs. When feeding, a stretchy ligament between the two halves of the lower jaw lets prey go down whole. Large species then manage for weeks without another meal.
Did you know that snakes have no eyelids? A clear scale covers each eye instead. Before a moult it clouds over and the animal can barely see, and shortly afterwards the old skin comes away in one piece, spectacles included.
