The tale reaches back much further than the famous photographs suggest. A seventh-century saint's life already tells of a water beast in the River Ness. Nessie became world famous only in 1933, when a new lochside road opened the glen to travellers and the papers printed the first sightings. Loch Ness runs more than thirty kilometres, stained dark by peat and deep enough to keep its rumours. Submarines, sonar sweeps and water samples have combed it ever since.
Did you know that the most famous Nessie photograph of 1934 showed a model built on a toy submarine? One of those involved admitted the hoax only sixty years later. It has done nothing to weaken the pull of the loch.
