This nocturnal wide-eyed flying squirrel puppet is made in ultra-soft plush in its gliding position, letting the puppeteer's hand sail this endearing creature along.
American flying squirrels of the genus Glaucomys live in the broadleaf and mixed woodlands of North America and come to life only after sunset. A furred fold of skin runs from wrist to ankle and turns into a wing once it is stretched taut. The flat, bushy tail steers the glide and acts as a brake on landing. Ordinary glides cover twenty to fifty metres, and distances well beyond ninety have been recorded. The menu takes in nuts, seeds, buds, berries, fungi and lichens, along with insects and the occasional bird's egg. Daylight hours are slept away in tree cavities, in winter often shared by several animals huddled together.
Did you know that flying squirrels glow pink under ultraviolet light? A research group out in the woods with a UV lamp in 2019 caught one in the beam and found it shining bright pink. Whether the fluorescence helps them signal to each other or blend into snowy nights is still an open question.
