Folkmanis Beaver Hand Puppet

Not for idle hands, this beaver puppet is ready to get down to business. His resume includes sleek brown fur (for swimming), a workable mouth (complete with gnawing incisors), a flat textured tail (for thumping) and a full set of realistic paws. But this fellow does not pause - a beaver’s work is never done!

The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) lives along wooded rivers, streams and lakes from Alaska down to Mexico and ranks among the largest rodents on Earth. Head and body together measure 74 to 90 centimetres, with a flat, hairless tail adding a further 20 to 35 centimetres; adults weigh anywhere from 16 to over 30 kilograms. It feeds entirely on plants – bark, twigs, water plants and buds – and stores a winter food cache underwater ahead of the cold season. Webbed hind feet make it a strong swimmer, and a transparent membrane protects its eyes while it stays submerged. Beavers live in family groups made up of a breeding pair and several years of offspring, who work together on the lodge and dam.

Did you know that beavers are considered excellent builders and can construct dams that transform entire landscapes? These industrious rodents use logs and mud to create complex structures that serve not only as their homes but also regulate local water levels.
