Squirrels (Sciuridae) live in woodland and parks across the temperate zones and spend most of the day up in the canopy. Their nests, round dreys of twigs and moss, sit in a fork close to the trunk; each animal keeps several and moves house when disturbed. The diet shifts with the season: buds and shoots in spring, seeds, nuts and fungi in autumn. They do not truly hibernate but sleep through the coldest days and live off their caches. The young are born naked and blind and stay in the drey for a good seven weeks.
