In the wild, adult raccoons typically weigh between four and nine kilograms, depending on season and food supply. Body length runs to roughly 40 to 70 centimetres, not counting the bushy, ringed tail. As omnivores, they eat fruit, nuts, insects, birds' eggs and small vertebrates. In cooler regions, raccoons build up fat reserves deliberately before winter sets in. They forage mostly at dusk and after dark, resting by day in a tree hollow.
