In the tradition of Folkmanis award-winning wildlife puppets comes this gracefully detailed grey squirrel hand puppet. Featuring rich plush, a movable mouth and thread whiskers, this inquisitive squirrel comes with his own acorn so he won't need to raid the nut bowl.
The eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) inhabits the deciduous woodlands of eastern North America, where it ranks among the commonest mammals. Head and body measure 23 to 30 centimetres, and the bushy tail adds almost the same length again. Acorns, hickory nuts, buds and fungi make up most of the diet, with tree sap taken in spring. Home is a drey of twigs and leaves high in a fork of branches, or an abandoned woodpecker hole. Females raise two litters a year; the young arrive naked and blind and stay with their mother for about three months. At the approach of danger a squirrel jerks its tail up and down, a warning the neighbours read at once.
Did you know that a grey squirrel can leap several metres from tree to tree, steering with its bushy tail? The tail balances the arc in the air and slows the animal on landing. When a branch is missed, that same tail works like a parachute, which is why squirrels survive long falls surprisingly often.
