Folkmanis Groundhog Hand Puppet

Poking his head out for some sunshine is this marvellous marmot, the Folkmanis groundhog hand puppet. This garden pal has an expressive face and movable mouth and forelegs to dig in deep and plant the seeds of imagination.

The groundhog (Marmota monax), also called the woodchuck, lives along woodland edges, in meadows and in gardens across eastern North America. It feeds on grasses, clover, dandelions and, given the chance, vegetables from the plot. Unlike its mountain relatives it lives alone and digs branching burrows with several exits, a sleeping chamber and a separate latrine. From autumn it enters true hibernation: body temperature drops to a few degrees and the heart slows to around four beats a minute. Abandoned burrows are later taken over by foxes, rabbits and skunks.

Did you know that this animal has a day of its own in the calendar? Every 2 February, crowds gather for Groundhog Day to watch one emerge from its burrow. If it supposedly sees its shadow, six more weeks of winter follow, a custom carried over by European settlers.
