Two black bands across the neck give the animal its name, and breeding males turn turquoise and gold. It hunts insects, spiders and smaller lizards from a raised stone. When alarmed it rears up and sprints away on its hind legs, tail held out behind as a counterweight.
Did you know that this lizard is called a mountain boomer in the southern states? It makes no sound whatsoever, and the call of some other animal was probably pinned on it. Unlike many lizards, it hardly ever sheds its tail, which would not grow back and is needed as a counterweight.
