The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) watches from a low branch above slow-flowing streams and clear lakes. It drops head first and seizes minnows, tadpoles and water insects in its bill. Pairs dig a nesting tunnel into a steep earth bank, sometimes more than half a metre deep. Bright as the plumage looks, the bird is hard to pick out against water and shadow. In hard frosts it moves to stretches that stay ice-free.
Did you know that a kingfisher works its catch against a perch until the fish lies head first in the bill? Only that way round can the scales and fins be swallowed safely. During courtship the male passes the female a fish held in exactly that position.
