Soft and sweet, the Folkmanis Mini Hamster puppet is a perfect pocket pet that comes alive with three fingers in the head and forelegs. Small enough to travel in a coat pocket, it is ready for the waiting room or the train.
Hamsters (Cricetinae) inhabit the steppes and semi-deserts of Eurasia, living alone in burrows they dig themselves, with separate chambers for sleeping, storing and waste. The golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), familiar from countless children's bedrooms, comes from a small area in northern Syria. It is active at dusk and through the night, once the heat of the steppe has eased. Cheek pouches reaching back to the shoulders carry grain, seeds and pieces of root, which are shaken out again underground. The larger European hamster gathers several kilograms of cereal this way and lives off it between bouts of winter sleep.
Did you know that nearly every golden hamster in the world is related? The zoologist Israel Aharoni dug out a female and her litter near Aleppo in 1930, and only a handful of the young survived. Nearly all of the golden hamsters in laboratories and homes today descend from those few animals.
