Folkmanis Fruit Bat Hand Puppet

Flying in for friendly fun is the Folkmanis Fruit Bat. Also known as a flying fox, this winged wonder has a cute, foxlike face with short snout and pointy ears as well as movable wings.

Flying foxes (Pteropus) live across the tropics of southern and South-East Asia, in Australia and on many islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. By day they hang in their hundreds from tall trees, in colonies that may occupy the same roost for decades. At night they travel to flowering and fruiting trees, often dozens of kilometres away, feeding on nectar, pollen and soft pulp. Solid food is chewed and the fibre spat out again, so that only the juice is swallowed. Because pollen rides along in their fur and seeds are dropped on the way, a great many tropical trees depend on them to reproduce.

Did you know that a hanging flying fox uses no muscular effort at all? The tendons running to its toes are arranged so that the claws close under the animal's own weight. The grip therefore holds through the deepest sleep and only releases when the bat pulls itself up again.
