Manatees (Trichechus manatus) live in the shallow coastal water, lagoons and river mouths between Florida and the Caribbean. They eat plants and nothing else, working through about a tenth of their own body weight in sea grass every day. A grown manatee weighs over four hundred kilograms, yet it drifts along at walking pace and surfaces only to breathe. Cold water is dangerous to them, so winter finds the herds gathered wherever warm springs feed into the sea.
Did you know that a manatee is more closely related to the elephant than to any whale? The two go back to the same ancestors, and nails still sit at the edge of each flipper, much like an elephant’s toenails. The upper lip works rather like a short trunk, pushing plants into the mouth.
