The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) lives in the rivers and lakes of sub-Saharan Africa. Eyes, ears and nostrils sit in one line along the top of the head, so the animal can stay almost fully submerged and still see, hear and breathe. It barely swims at all: it walks and pushes off along the bottom, surfacing every few minutes for air. Feeding happens at night on land, when the herd spreads out to crop short grass. A calf is usually born in shallow water and suckles there from the start.
Did you know that hippos make their own sunscreen? Glands in the skin release a thick secretion that turns red in the air and later brownish. It blocks ultraviolet light and holds bacteria in check, and for a long time the red film was mistaken for blood.
