The fascinating pangolin is an extraordinary scaly skinned mammal that resembles a reptile. Distinctive illusion printed scales, a movable head and movable forelegs with a tail that wraps around give life to this marvellous Folkmanis pangolin hand puppet.
Pangolins (Pholidota) live in the forests and savannahs of Africa and Asia, most of them solitary and active by night. Their scales are made of keratin, the same material as our fingernails, and overlap across the back like roof tiles. They have no teeth at all. Powerful claws on the forelegs tear open termite mounds, a sticky tongue collects the insects, and swallowed grit does the grinding in the stomach. Under threat the animal curls into a ball that defeats even a lion.
Did you know that a pangolin's tongue is longer than its body? It is anchored not in the throat but far back, down near the pelvis. No other mammal wears scales, and no mammal in the world is trafficked more.
