The skin of an octopus is packed with tiny colour cells called chromatophores. Small muscles pull them open or let them shrink, so that colour and pattern change in less than a second. The animal also raises little skin papillae to copy the texture of rock or seagrass. The odd part is that octopuses are colour-blind — control over the pattern appears to run through light-sensitive cells in the skin itself. Two-thirds of their nerve cells sit not in the brain at all, but spread through the eight arms.
Did you know that octopuses use tools? Off the coast of Indonesia, veined octopuses have been filmed carrying halved coconut shells beneath their bodies across the seabed, ready to hide inside them later. It counts as one of the few documented cases of tool use among invertebrates.
