Bats (Chiroptera) account for a good one mammal species in five and are absent only from the polar regions. Their flight membrane stretches between greatly elongated fingers, the body and the hind legs, and they beat their wings in true powered flight rather than gliding. Most species hunt insects after dark and locate them by echolocation, calling in ultrasound and reading distance, size and heading from the returning echo. Others live on fruit, nectar and pollen, pollinating cacti and agaves as they feed. At rest they hang upside down, the tendons in their toes locking shut under their own weight.
Did you know that not one bat is blind? Every species has working eyes, and the larger fruit bats see better at dusk than we do. The phrase “blind as a bat” has nonetheless survived for centuries, most likely because nobody could explain how an animal dodges every obstacle in pitch darkness.
