Folkmanis Poodle Moth Hand Puppet

Only one credible photograph of the poodle moth in the wild exists. The zoologist who took it in Venezuela in 2009 made famous a creature that has puzzled researchers ever since. The Folkmanis Poodle Moth hand puppet is a stretch velour glove design with a fluffy white plush body, big black eyes, printed organza wings and large antennae.

The poodle moth has still not been pinned down. Specialists place it with the lappet moths (Lasiocampidae), most likely in the genus Artace, which is widespread across the Americas. Moths of this group carry dense scales and hair that hold warmth and blur their outline under a lamp. A male's feathered antennae pick up the scent of a female from a great distance. Many lappet moths never feed as adults; their time runs only to mating.

Did you know that the poodle moth was named on the internet rather than in science? The picture spread in 2012 as the find of a supposedly new creature, although it had been online for years. No second image has turned up since.
