The orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) lives in the rainforests of South-East Asia, from Malaysia through Thailand to Indonesia. It perches on shrubs and low trees and waits there without moving. Its widened leg segments recall petals, while the raptorial forelegs stay folded beneath the head. Females grow a good twice as long as males and many times heavier, a gap matched by hardly any other mantis. Bees, flies and butterflies make up most of its diet.
Did you know that the orchid mantis does not merely copy a flower, but works as one? For a field study, researchers placed single mantises on bare sticks, well away from any plant. Pollinating insects approached the mantises more often than they visited the real blossoms nearby. The colouring is therefore not a hiding place but a lure.
