The luna moth (Actias luna) belongs to the giant silk moths and flies through the deciduous woodlands of eastern North America. Its caterpillars feed on birch, walnut, hickory and sweetgum, gaining a remarkable amount of bulk within a few weeks. The adult has no working mouthparts and lives entirely on the reserves built up during the caterpillar stage. That leaves it roughly five to seven days to find a mate. It takes to the air only once darkness has fallen.
Did you know that the long streamers on a luna moth's hindwings are a defence against bats? They spin in flight and send back an echo that makes a hunting bat's sonar settle on the wrong spot. In experiments, moths that kept their streamers survived far more often, because the strike landed on the trailing tip instead of the body.
