Nudibranchs are marine snails that shed their shell as larvae and spend the rest of their lives without one. Some three thousand described species occur in every ocean, from the tide line down to depths of several thousand metres. A pair of club-shaped scent organs called rhinophores sits on the head and detects prey and partners in the surrounding water. The diet consists of animals that cannot run away: sponges, bryozoans and sea squirts, whose pigments often supply the nudibranch's own colouring. Since every individual is male and female at once, any encounter can end in mating.
Did you know that some nudibranchs borrow their prey's weapons? Species that feed on cnidarians leave the stinging cells undigested and route them intact into the appendages along the back. There they sit, fully loaded, until a predator comes too close.
