The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) lives along the shores of the North Pacific, from California through Alaska to Kamchatka, and spends almost its whole life in the water. It dives for sea urchins, clams, crabs and snails, eating about a quarter of its body weight each day to offset the cold. Unlike seals it carries no layer of blubber; instead it wears the densest fur in the animal kingdom, up to 150,000 hairs per square centimetre. Its hind feet are drawn out into broad paddles, while the forepaws stay short and dexterous. Sea otters sleep wrapped in beds of kelp so the current cannot carry them off.
Did you know that sea otters come with built-in pockets? A loose fold of skin under each foreleg holds a favourite stone and the next meal while the animal rises to the surface. Floating on its back, it balances the stone on its chest and knocks the shellfish against it until the shell gives way.
