Adding to the Folkmanis family of award-winning dragon puppets is this symbol of heraldry, the wyvern dragon. It is easy to work the velvety mouth and tongue of this scaly green beast.
The wyvern is the two-legged, winged form of the dragon that European heraldry has used since the high Middle Ages: a long serpentine body, bat-like wings and a barbed tail. Its name travels back through Old French to the viper, and that is precisely how the creature was read, as a serpent that had learned to fly. On banners, seals and house marks it stood for vigilance and defence, and Wessex and the city of Leicester carry it still. Norse tradition puts the same beast to quite different work, coiled around gold, poisoning wells and waiting for a hero such as Sigurd to come for it. Guardian on one side, adversary on the other, that double role feeds every dragon tale told since.
Did you know that one famous wyvern owes its face to a rhinoceros? A huge skull came out of the ground near Klagenfurt in 1335 and was taken for the head of a slain dragon. Two and a half centuries later a sculptor copied it in stone for the town's dragon fountain. The bone in fact belonged to an ice-age woolly rhinoceros.
