A “moo”vable mouth gives life to the extraordinary Folkmanis highland cow hand puppet. Known for having a gentle demeanour, this rustic cattle breed features distinctive long horns and a ginger coloured, wavy, woolly coat to warm your heart.
The Highland cow comes from the Scottish Highlands and the Hebrides and is the oldest breed with a herd book of its own, opened in 1885. Its coat has two layers: a dense woolly undercoat and long oily guard hairs above it that shed the rain. As a result the breed needs no thick layer of fat and stays outdoors through storm and wet. Cows and bulls both grow horns, those of the cows longer and finer in their curve. On poor grazing it takes heather, rushes and scrub growth that other breeds will not touch.
Did you know that the fringe over a Highland cow’s eyes has a name of its own? In Scottish Gaelic the forelock is called the dossan. It keeps rain and glare out of the eyes and fends off biting flies, which is why the breed suffers less eye trouble than short-haired cattle.
