With sad eyes and a droopy expression, this basset hound puppet begs for a warm cuddle. Hey, we all need a hug now and then, right! And with his soft plush, you will want to hug him again and again.
The basset hound (Canis lupus familiaris) descends from heavy French scent hounds and was bred to its present form in nineteenth-century England. Head and nose come from the same line as the bloodhound, but here they belong to a short-legged, heavily built body. At around 35 centimetres at the shoulder the dog weighs 20 to 30 kilograms, carrying more bone for its size than any other breed. The very long ears and the loose skin of the throat stir up ground scent and hold it close to the nose. Only the bloodhound works a colder trail.
Did you know that the basset owes its name to hunting on foot? Bas is French for low, and that was precisely the breeding aim: a scent hound slow enough for a person without a horse to stay with the trail. Its deep, carrying voice tells you exactly where it is, half a wood away.
