Female elephants live in close-knit, matriarch-led herds, while adult bulls leave the group and generally roam alone. At around 22 months, elephants have the longest gestation period of any land mammal. A calf weighs about 100 kilograms at birth and can stand and follow the herd within a few hours. It is suckled for up to four years and stays close to its mother for many years after that. Female offspring often remain within the same herd for life, while young males leave once they reach sexual maturity.
