Folkmanis Kiwi Hand Puppet

The kiwi from down under in New Zealand is a pear-shaped, nocturnal, flightless bird. This endangered species shares its name with the people of its homeland and stands there for conservation. The Folkmanis Kiwi hand puppet is worked in soft plush with velour accents, and the animated head and foot pockets give it lifelike movement.

Kiwis (genus Apteryx) work the forest floor of New Zealand at night and rest by day in burrows and hollow logs. Their plumage feels more like coarse hair, and the wings have shrunk to a few centimetres hidden beneath it. The kiwi is the only bird with nostrils at the tip of its bill, sniffing out earthworms, beetle grubs and millipedes in the leaf litter. Powerful legs account for roughly a third of its body weight. Pairs often stay together for years and call to one another across the dark.

Did you know that a female kiwi lays an egg weighing about a fifth of her own body weight? In the days before laying there is barely room inside her for food, so she fasts. Incubation afterwards is usually the male's job.
