Folkmanis Monarch Life Cycle - Metamorphose Hand Puppet

Caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly, in three turns of the hand: the Folkmanis monarch life cycle hand puppet changes from one stage to the next. Use the zips to tuck one form away and reveal the following one, then watch the sequence unfold in front of your audience. Once the change is complete, slip your hands into the monarch wings and take flight.

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) lays its eggs on milkweed alone, the North American relatives of our spurge family. Caterpillars take in bitter compounds with every leaf, and those compounds stay in the body, leaving the adult butterfly unpalatable to birds. The orange and black pattern is therefore a warning rather than decoration. Each autumn the butterflies leave Canada and the northern states, travel several thousand kilometres south and settle by the thousand on the same oyamel firs in the mountain forests of Michoacán. Spring sends them north again.

Did you know that one migration takes four generations to complete? Summer butterflies live only a few weeks, yet the final brood of the year survives eight months, flies south and starts the return journey in spring. Not one of them has travelled the route before.
