An Old World prehistoric looking bird rumoured to be related to dinosaurs, the massive shoebill makes a clattering sound. The Folkmanis shoebill stage puppet is designed in a cool grey-blue palette of feathery plush. Expressive eyes and a hidden castanet to clatter away lend this intriguing bird realism with a touch of whimsy.
The shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) inhabits the papyrus swamps of East Africa, from South Sudan down to Zambia. Standing upright it reaches an adult's chest, and its wings span more than two metres. The bill is as broad as a wooden clog and ends in a sharp hook, with which it seizes lungfish, catfish, young crocodiles and water snakes. To hunt, it stands motionless among the reeds, sometimes for half an hour, then topples forward bodily into the water. Shoebills live alone and keep well apart from one another even in the breeding season.
Did you know that shoebills greet one another with a bow? When a bird meets its mate at the nest it lowers its head almost to the ground and rattles its bill, a dry clatter that carries far across the swamp. Otherwise it hardly calls at all.
