The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second largest living bird after the ostrich and lives only in Australia. It cannot fly, but it runs at up to 50 kilometres an hour and roams great distances in search of rain. Its feathers are double-shafted, with two shafts growing from a single quill, and hang down like coarse hair. Fruit, seeds, insects and flowers make up the diet, along with pebbles that help grind the food in the gizzard.
Did you know that it is the male emu who broods? He sits on the dark green eggs for around eight weeks, barely eating or drinking and losing a great deal of weight. He then leads the chicks through the bush alone for months.
