Long eyelashes and a soft sueded beak make this ostrich stage puppet proud to pull her head out of the sand and join in on some puppet fun!
The ostrich (Struthio camelus) is the largest living bird on earth, with cocks standing up to 2.7 metres tall and weighing as much as 130 kilograms. It belongs to the savannahs and semi-deserts of Africa, where small parties roam in search of grazing. Flight is out of the question, yet no other two-legged animal runs faster, reaching 70 kilometres an hour in strides several metres long. Each foot carries only two toes, the larger one tipped with a heavy claw that doubles as a weapon. Grasses, seeds, leaves and insects make up the diet, swallowed together with small stones that grind the coarse food in the gizzard.
Did you know that an ostrich never buries its head in the sand? Faced with danger it lays neck and head flat along the ground, and from a distance both vanish into the shimmering grass. The nest supplies the other half of the old tale, since the bird pushes its head deep into the sandy scrape to turn the eggs.
