Adults reach around a metre in length while staying remarkably slender. A turquoise stripe runs the length of the back, flanked by black bands and a red border, and the head is rusty red. Threatened, the snake slips into the water and stays submerged until the danger has passed.
Did you know that garter snakes lay no eggs at all? The young develop inside the mother and arrive fully formed in late summer, with a single litter sometimes numbering more than twenty. From the first day they fend for themselves and set off hunting on their own.
