Unlike the rabbit, the European hare (Lepus europaeus) digs no burrow and instead rests above ground in a shallow scrape called a form. It is a solitary animal and generally seeks out other hares only during the early-spring mating season. That is when the well-known "boxing" matches happen, mostly females fending off overeager males. Its diet consists of grasses, herbs and field crops, switching to buds and young shoots in winter. With no burrow for shelter, the hare relies almost entirely on camouflage and sheer speed to escape danger.
