Crossed with the Quarter Horse, their descendants became a breed with a registry of its own in 1962. Ranch riders valued them for short bursts of speed and the footwork needed to cut a single steer out of a herd. The white patches follow two basic patterns, tobiano and overo, told apart by where the colour sits.
Did you know that pinto and Paint are not the same thing? Pinto describes the coat pattern alone and turns up in a great many breeds. A Paint Horse is a breed in its own right: registration depends on descent from Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds or other Paint Horses.
