Folkmanis Harp Seal Pup Hand Puppet

Chase away the chill with the cuddly and sweet Folkmanis Harp Seal Pup hand puppet. It has big coal black eyes, a movable mouth and front flippers, and its thick, soft fur is made for snuggling.

The harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) gives birth on the pack ice of the North Atlantic, off Newfoundland, near Jan Mayen and in the White Sea. Newborns wear a woolly white coat of foetal fur called lanugo, which leaves them barely visible against the bright ice. Nursing lasts only ten to twelve days, yet the milk holds more than 40 per cent fat. Pups put on around two kilograms a day during that time. They are then left alone on the ice, moult, and take to the water for the first time.

Did you know that harp seals rank among the greatest travellers of all seals? Over a single year they cover several thousand kilometres between the whelping ice and their feeding grounds in the far north. Adults owe their name to the dark marking across the back, which from a distance looks like a harp.
