Looking deceptively like a domestic cat, the bobcat remains wild at heart as it hunts through the night for prey. Bring the wonder of nature to your fingertips with this mini bobcat finger puppet from Folkmanis. Small enough for a coat pocket, it is ready whenever a story is.
The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is the most common wild cat in North America, ranging from southern Canada to southern Mexico. Woodland, scrubby desert, swamp margins and the outskirts of towns suit it equally well. Rabbits and hares make up the bulk of its diet, topped up with mice, birds and the odd young deer. A grown animal weighs six to thirteen kilograms, roughly twice as much as a house cat. Tufted ears and flared cheek whiskers frame its face, and it patrols a solitary territory of several square kilometres.
Did you know that the bobcat takes its name from its tail rather than its coat? Barely a hand's span long, the tail looks as though it has been cut short, or bobbed. The coat tells a different story altogether: reddish through the summer, and noticeably greyer once winter arrives.
